Tanker Attacks Raise Fresh Concerns Over Global Energy Route

DUBAI – Fresh security concerns have emerged in the Gulf after at least two commercial tankers were damaged while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical maritime corridors for oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments.

According to Reuters, one of the affected vessels was a Qatari LNG tanker that caught fire in its engine room after being struck near Omani waters. All crew members were reported safe, while emergency response teams worked to contain the incident and prevent further damage.

In a separate incident, a Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker also sustained damage while navigating the strategic waterway. Maritime authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the attacks, although initial reports indicated that drones or unidentified projectiles may have been involved. No official confirmation has been issued regarding those responsible.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued security advisories following the incidents, urging commercial vessels operating near the Omani coast and the Strait of Hormuz to exercise heightened caution as investigations continue.

The attacks come at a time of persistent geopolitical tensions across the Middle East, renewing concerns over the security of one of the world's busiest energy shipping lanes. The Strait of Hormuz carries a substantial share of global crude oil and LNG exports, making any disruption a matter of international economic significance.
