Thailand Welcomes 19.76 Million Tourists Despite 2.91% Decline
BANGKOK – Thailand recorded 19.76 million international tourist arrivals between January 1 and August 15, 2026, down 2.91 percent from the same period last year, while foreign visitors generated an estimated 957.62 billion baht in spending.
Preliminary figures from Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports showed that the country received 19,759,655 international arrivals during the period. Despite the decline in visitor numbers, tourism remains a major contributor to Thailand’s economy.
China remained Thailand’s largest source market, accounting for 3,330,481 visitors, followed by Malaysia with 2,496,831 and India with 1,456,696. Russia ranked fourth with 1,140,441 arrivals, while South Korea recorded 729,367 visitors.
Tourist flows weakened further during the week of August 9–15, when Thailand recorded 612,643 foreign arrivals, a 3.79 percent decline from the previous week. Authorities attributed part of the slowdown to the end of the summer holiday season in several major markets.
Chinese arrivals fell 4.02 percent week-on-week to 123,410 visitors as the country entered the final stage of its summer holiday period. Malaysian arrivals also declined ahead of a long holiday, while European travel began to slow as the summer vacation season came to an end.
Not every market followed the downward trend. Japan was among the stronger-performing markets, with arrivals rising 13.71 percent in one week to 30,666 visitors, supported by the Mountain Day and Obon holiday periods.
Earlier figures showed that Thailand had already welcomed more than 18.5 million foreign visitors by August 1, generating over 896 billion baht in tourism revenue. The latest figures indicate that tourism spending continues to grow even as visitor numbers remain below last year's level.
Thailand now enters the second half of the year with the crucial end-of-year travel season ahead. The country will need to maintain demand from Asian markets while attracting more long-haul visitors as competition among international destinations intensifies.
The performance of China, Malaysia, India, Russia and European markets will be particularly important in determining whether Thailand can strengthen its tourism recovery before the end of 2026.
