Qatar Launches 2025/2026 Local Agriculture Markets to Strengthen Food Security
DOHA, Qatar — Qatar officially opened its 2025/2026 local agricultural markets this week, showcasing fresh produce from more than 100 Qatari farms as part of a national push to strengthen food security and sustainable farming practices. According to a report published by The Times of India, the initiative marks one of the country’s largest seasonal market programs to date.
Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality, which oversees the agricultural market program, emphasized that the move is aimed at expanding domestic production and reducing reliance on imported food supplies.
“This season strengthens our commitment to high-quality local agriculture and supports farmers across the country,” an official from the ministry stated.
The seasonal markets operating across multiple locations including Al Mazroua, Al Khor, Al Wakrah, and others will run throughout the cooler months, when local farm output reaches its peak. The program has historically served as a key platform connecting farmers directly with consumers, offering vegetables, fruits, honey, dairy, and various organic products.
According to the report, more than 100 Qatari farms are registered for the 2025/2026 season an increase compared to previous years. The Times of India noted that the government views this expansion as an important indicator of the country’s agricultural resilience.
“The markets have grown not only in size but also in the diversity of products available,” the publication reported, citing ministry officials.
The initiative is part of Qatar’s broader long-term strategy to develop sustainable food systems following lessons learned from global supply chain disruptions and regional geopolitical tensions. The expansion supports Qatar National Vision 2030, which highlights food security as a strategic priority.
Agricultural analysts say that Qatar’s reliance on food imports previously reaching more than 70 percent of national consumption has gradually decreased as domestic production capabilities improve.
The seasonal markets serve as a practical tool for strengthening local supply chains and stabilizing prices.
Looking ahead, authorities plan to further modernize the sector through advanced greenhouse systems, water-efficient irrigation, and technology-based farm management. Officials also signaled continued investment in partnerships with regional food producers to complement Qatar’s domestic output.
With more than 100 participating farms and nationwide public access, the local markets are expected to draw strong attendance in the coming weeks, reinforcing Qatar’s position as one of the Gulf region’s fastest-advancing agricultural ecosystems.
