Sri Lanka Targets 2.7 Million Tourists and $4.2 Billion in Revenue
COLOMBO – Sri Lanka has launched a major tourism promotion campaign across six key international markets as the island nation seeks to attract 2.7 million visitors and generate $4.2 billion in tourism revenue in 2026, following disruptions to international travel caused by conflict in the Middle East.
The campaign targets travelers from Australia, China, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia and India, with authorities hoping stronger digital marketing and promotional activities will boost bookings ahead of the northern winter travel season. Reuters reported that the campaign is part of Sri Lanka’s efforts to rebuild tourism momentum after visitor arrivals declined during March and April.
Sri Lanka welcomed around 1.3 million international tourists during the first seven months of 2026, generating approximately $1.5 billion in tourism earnings by the end of July. Tourism remains one of the country’s most important sources of foreign exchange.
However, international travel was disrupted by escalating conflict in the Gulf region. Reuters reported that tourist arrivals fell by about 20 percent in March and April, prompting authorities to revise the annual target from three million visitors to 2.7 million.
Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam said the country remained confident about reaching the revised target through stronger promotion and improved airline connectivity.
“We surpassed 1.4 million arrivals right now at the beginning of August, and we are aiming for 2.7 million tourists with the upcoming season and promotions in line,” Hewawasam said, according to EconomyNext.
The interim promotional campaign has a budget of around 1.5 billion Sri Lankan rupees and will run through April 2027. Authorities are developing market-specific strategies, combining digital advertising with roadshows and other promotional activities.
According to the Daily Mirror, Sri Lanka is also preparing a larger global branding campaign with an estimated budget of 5 billion rupees, scheduled to begin in 2027. The initiative is intended to strengthen Sri Lanka’s global tourism brand and attract higher-spending visitors.
The country's strategy goes beyond increasing visitor numbers. Tourism authorities are also promoting specialized sectors including wellness, diving, golf, marine tourism and adventure travel, while seeking to introduce lesser-known destinations in Sri Lanka’s northern and eastern provinces to international travelers.
Sri Lanka recorded a record 2.36 million tourist arrivals in 2025, generating around $3.2 billion in tourism revenue. With the revised 2026 target of 2.7 million visitors and $4.2 billion in earnings, the government is betting on tourism as a key driver of the island nation’s economic recovery.
