The Struggle of the Orphanage in Semarang when Dozens of Foster Children were Exposed to Covid-19
INTERNATIONAL | SEMARANG, CENTRAL JAVA - Putri Aisyiyah Orphanage in Tuntang District, Semarang Regency, is still struggling to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. The place that accommodates 60 children has experienced a difficult time when dozens of its foster children were infected with the corona virus last July.
There were 13 children living in the orphanage and two administrators were exposed to COVID-19 at that time.
The caretakers of the orphanage are struggling to save the children so that the deadly virus does not spread further in the orphanage.
Chairperson of the Putri Aisyiyah Orphanage, Tuntang Endang Wiratni, said that the exam that befell the orphanage started with one of the teachers who died due to exposure to Covid-19. Due to the close contact with the children, the orphanage management took the initiative to carry out tracing by holding an antigen swab test for 44 children carried out by the Tuntang Health Center and private clinics. Surprising results were received by the orphanage when 13 children and 2 administrators were declared reactive for Covid-19, some of whom were even symptomatic.
Endang said that the orphanage had created a special room for children to self-isolate so as not to infect other children, while waiting for the availability of a centralized isolation place from the Semarang Regency government. After getting a place, the children were moved to an isoter with the help of the Semarang District Health Office.
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has been very hard for orphanages. They must take care of their children's needs, take care of their health, and pay attention to their education and development. But at the same time administrators must also take care of themselves.
However, the caretaker of the Putri Aisyiyah Tuntang Orphanage, Sri Hartini, is still grateful because the attention of donors in difficult times like this has actually increased. According to him, there are still many people who continue to share with children who need this community's love.
