Philippines Exempts Import Duty for Indonesian Automotive Products
INDONESIAN AUTOMOTIVE - JAKARTA August 14th, 2021, The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) announced that Indonesian automotive products are free from the imposition of security measures (BMTP) definitively, following the termination of safeguards for imports of Indonesian automotive products by the Philippine Tariff Commission (Tariff Commission/TC).
The decision is contained in Administrative Order Number 21-04 signed by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on August 6, 2021 and officially announced on August 11, 2021. "The release of Indonesian automotive products from the Philippine safeguard is very encouraging news and should be grateful for. We hope that Indonesia's car export access to the Philippines can be opened again, "because Indonesia has automotive products that are competitive in the international market. This certainly has a good impact on efforts to recover the national economy," said Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi in a press statement, Saturday (14 August 2021).
The safeguard investigation of Indonesian automotive products has been ongoing since January 17, 2020 at the request of the Philippine Metal Workers Alliance (PMA). During the investigation period, the Philippine authorities also imposed a temporary security measure import duty (BMTPS) which was implemented since February 1, 2021.
With the Administrative Order, the Philippine DTI officially stopped the imposition of BMTPS. In addition, the BMTPS cash bond import duties that have been previously paid by importers can be returned.
Previously, the Philippines imposed a BMTPS of PHP 70,000 or approximately Rp. 21 million per vehicle in the form of cash bonds for importing passenger cars (passenger cars). Acting Director General of Foreign Trade Indrasari Wisnu Wardhana said that the Indonesian automotive industry is currently growing rapidly. “Motor vehicles are one of Indonesia's mainstay products. Various types of trade barriers, including safeguards imposed by destination countries, we will try to handle as much as possible, "said Wisnu.
