Netherlands Considers Lifting Social Restrictions September 20
The Efforts How to Avoid Infected Persons in Pandemic Era
INTERNATIONAL | AMSTERDAM - Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that the government was considering the abolition of social distancing rules on September 20 as cases of COVID-19 in the country had decreased.
In the week to August 10, cases in the Netherlands fell 14 percent to 103 cases per 100,000 population, according to the Dutch National Institute of Health.
However, Rutte said a number of COVID-19 restrictions were still needed for now, including closing nightclubs and restaurants after midnight.
Efforts to remove most restrictions, such as on nightlife, on June 26 had to be postponed by two weeks after infections among young people spiked.
"Early summer taught us that we have to be really careful," said Rutte.
However, he said, campuses would be allowed to resume activities at the end of August without requiring students to maintain physical distance in class.
Around two-thirds of Dutch citizens aged 16 years and over have been fully vaccinated and 90 percent admitted to having or planning to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
