INTERNATIONAL | Haiti, August 16th, 2021 - An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 in Haiti claimed the lives of 1,297 people. The SAR team succeeded in evacuating the victims who were buried under the rubble that was destroyed by the severe shaking.
Haiti's Civil Protection Agency said the number of victims of the disaster had risen to 1,297. While the injured are estimated at 5,700 people.
Saturday's 7.2-magnitude quake has destroyed thousands of homes and buildings in the Caribbean nation which is still fighting back from another major quake 11 years ago and is yet to recover from the assassination of its president last month.
Southwest Haiti, especially the city of Les Cayes, was the worst hit by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake. Churches, hotels, hospitals and schools were badly damaged or destroyed, while prison walls were torn apart by the violent shaking that rocked Haiti.
"We must work together to provide a swift and effective response to this very serious situation," said Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who flew to Les Cayes.
Nearby countries, including the Dominican Republic and Mexico, rushed to send much-needed food and medicine by air and across Haiti's land border. ner
