Bangkok Pub Fire Kills 27, Dozens Left Critically Injured
BANGKOK – At least 27 people were killed and 63 others injured, including 22 in critical condition, after a devastating fire swept through a popular pub in Bangkok's Chatuchak district early Monday (July 13), prompting Thai authorities to launch a full investigation into one of the country's deadliest entertainment venue disasters in recent years.
According to The Associated Press (AP), the blaze erupted shortly after midnight at Na Ladprao Pub, which was crowded with customers at the time.
Witnesses told investigators that smoke was first seen rising from an electrical circuit near the stage before a sudden explosion triggered a power outage, rapidly filling the venue with thick smoke and leaving many patrons struggling to escape.
Al Jazeera reported that many of the victims were discovered inside restrooms at the rear of the building, where they apparently sought refuge from the flames but became trapped by toxic smoke and limited escape routes.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control within about 30 minutes, although much of the pub's interior was completely destroyed.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene within hours of the tragedy and ordered a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire.
Authorities have also instructed entertainment venues across Bangkok to review their fire safety systems, emergency exits, electrical installations, and evacuation procedures.
Bangkok officials have established a registration center to assist families searching for missing relatives as forensic teams continue identifying victims.
Several survivors remain hospitalized with severe burns and smoke inhalation, while emergency medical teams continue providing intensive treatment to those in critical condition.
The tragedy has once again raised concerns about fire safety standards in Thailand's nightlife industry. Safety experts say the latest disaster echoes previous nightclub fires that exposed weaknesses in emergency preparedness and building safety compliance.
Analysts believe the outcome of the government's investigation could lead to stricter regulations and more rigorous inspections of entertainment venues across the country.
