143 New Cases of COVID-19 in China
INTERNATIONAL | WORLD PANDEMIC ERA - BEIJING - China reported 143 new cases of COVID-19 on the mainland on Aug. 9, up from 125 the day before, health authorities said on Tuesday.
The latest cluster of coronavirus infections in China has been driven primarily by the highly contagious Delta variant, officials said.
Among the new confirmed cases of COVID-19, which is the highest number China has reported since January 20, 108 were locally transmitted while the rest were infections from abroad, China's National Health Commission (NHC) said.
Most cases of local infection have occurred in the eastern province of Jiangsu and the central province of Henan. The number of new asymptomatic COVID-19 cases reached 38 on Monday, from 39 the day before.
However, China does not classify asymptomatic COVID-19 patients as confirmed cases.
China has reported a total of 93,969 coronavirus infections since the outbreak began. Meanwhile, the number of reported deaths remains at 4,636.
