JAKARTA – Men from the United States were the largest foreign-national group recorded in marriages with Indonesian women in Jakarta, according to data from the Jakarta Population and Civil Registration Office (Dukcapil). The office recorded 158 such couples between 2020 and August 2025.
The figures were presented by Witri Yenny, Head of Civil Registration at the Jakarta Dukcapil Office, during a Jawara Podcast discussion titled From the Wedding Altar to Civil Registration: Cross-Border Marriages in September 2025.
Singaporean men ranked second, with 132 couples, followed by German men with 120, Chinese men with 113, Australian men with 103, and Malaysian men with 99.
The records also listed 90 couples involving Japanese men and Indonesian women, and another 90 involving Dutch men. British men accounted for 84 couples, while South Korean men accounted for 55.
Overall, Jakarta Dukcapil received 1,952 reports of mixed marriages involving Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals from 2020 through August 2025. The office said the annual average was approximately 250 to 300 couples.
The figures showed a different pattern for marriages between Indonesian men and foreign women. Singaporean women topped that category, with 58 couples.
They were followed by Chinese women with 53 couples, Japanese women with 47, Malaysian women with 41, and South Korean women with 36. Australian and Filipino women each accounted for 22 couples.
The data indicates that the most common foreign-national partners differed depending on whether the Indonesian spouse was a woman or a man.
Witri reminded couples who marry foreign nationals to register their marriages with the civil registration office. Official registration provides legal recognition and greater certainty, including regarding the legal status of children.
Mixed marriages are addressed in Articles 57 to 62 of Indonesia’s Law No. 1 of 1974 on Marriage. The provisions cover marriages between individuals subject to different laws because of their nationalities, where one spouse is an Indonesian citizen.
The figures of 158 US-Indonesian couples apply specifically to marriage reports recorded in Jakarta. They should not be interpreted as a nationwide ranking of foreign husbands of Indonesian women.
