JAKARTA – India is strengthening its position as one of Indonesia’s major export markets. Indonesia’s non-oil and gas exports to India reached US$15 billion between January and September 2026, equivalent to approximately Rp272.4 trillion, marking a 14.85 percent increase from the same period last year.
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) ranked India as the third-largest destination for Indonesian non-oil and gas exports, after China, with US$54.17 billion, and the United States, with US$25.39 billion.
BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Ateng Hartono said mineral fuels were the largest export category shipped to India, accounting for 31.50 percent of Indonesia’s non-oil and gas exports to the country.
Mineral Fuels and Vegetable Oils Lead Exports
In addition to mineral fuels, animal and vegetable fats and oils, including palm oil, remain important products in trade between the two countries.
BPS data cited by Bisnis.com showed that Indonesian non-oil and gas exports to India reached US$2.23 billion in September 2026, increasing 55.65 percent compared with September 2025.
One of the most significant increases came from animal and vegetable fats and oils. Exports in this category surged 460.36 percent, from US$112.41 million in September 2025 to US$629.92 million in September 2026.
Mineral fuel exports to India reached US$631.23 million in September. Meanwhile, exports of electrical machinery and equipment and their parts rose 350.97 percent to US$184 million. Iron and steel exports also increased 72.32 percent to US$231.88 million.
India Emerges as a Strategic Export Market
Indonesia’s total exports reached US$221.23 billion between January and September 2026, increasing 5.58 percent compared with the same period in 2025.
Non-oil and gas exports contributed US$212.27 billion, representing 6.30 percent growth. Manufacturing was the largest contributing sector, with exports valued at US$182.83 billion.
The growth in exports to India highlights opportunities for Indonesian products in South Asia, particularly in energy, vegetable oils and manufactured goods.
However, strengthening trade relations also requires product diversification and greater value addition so Indonesia does not rely excessively on raw materials and primary commodities.
