JAKARTA – Six students from Indonesian special needs schools have won six medals at the 2026 Battle of the Chefs (BOTC), an international culinary competition held in Penang, Malaysia, from October 21 to 24.
The Indonesian delegation secured four silver medals and two bronze medals, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) on October 26.
The six students represented schools from different regions across Indonesia. They were Keylla Almayra from State Special Needs School 1 Bantul, Yogyakarta; Dinda Aprillia from State Special Needs School Pembina Palembang, South Sumatra; Roainun from State Special Needs School Pangeran Cakrabuana, West Java; Charisya Apta Maydian Aglind from State Special Needs School Semarang, Central Java; Hepi Vania Zendrato from State Special Needs School 1 Padang, West Sumatra; and Andi Ismira Aulia from State Special Needs School Tanjung Selor, North Kalimantan.
One of the highlighted entries was a two-tier floral-themed cake created by Andi Ismira and Hepi Vania. Their design featured flower decorations and basket-inspired ornaments.
For Andi Ismira, the competition marked her first experience representing Indonesia at an international event. She said the achievement had encouraged her to continue developing her skills and take on new challenges.
Another participant, Dinda Aprillia, demonstrated strong commitment during her preparation. Her teacher and mentor, Labora Francisca, said Dinda continued attending school for training despite the haze affecting Palembang at the time.
For the competition, Dinda created a Chinese New Year-themed cake decorated with a dragon and traditional festive ornaments.
Rusprita Putri Utami, head of the Ministry's Center for Student Achievement and Character Development, said international competitions provide students with special educational needs opportunities beyond winning awards. They also help develop practical skills, creativity, confidence and independence.
The achievement highlights the importance of inclusive education and vocational training in helping students with disabilities develop their talents and access wider opportunities in education and future careers.
