Kumon Educational Japan Co., Ltd is a learning course organization founded by Toru Kumon in 1958 .
The Kumon Method is a method of learning mathematics and reading comprehension that is applied in the classroom effectively. Kumon was developed with a franchise system . The Kumon method has the goal of enabling students to achieve high school material by self-study.
Beginning with the opening of classes in Osaka , Japan in 1958, the Kumon Method has now spread to 51 countries with more than four million two hundred thousand students studying with this method.
In 1954, Toru Kumon's son, Takeshi, who was in the second grade of elementary school, got bad grades in mathematics at his school. The mother shared this concern with Toru Kumon, who was a high school math teacher at the time. After trying to help Takeshi with his math lessons, Toru Kumon felt that the textbooks used at school could not help students gain the confidence and skills needed. Because of that, Toru Kumon decided to make his own math problems on loose leaf paperfor Takeshi to work on every day. With the thought that Takeshi got the skills he needed when he entered high school, Toru Kumon tried to create questions that would allow Takeshi to study independently. This was the beginning of the creation of the Kumon Method.
With this learning method, by the end of 3rd grade, Takeshi had advanced to compound linear equations with three variables. Even before he was in the 6th grade, Takeshi had come to the subject of differential and integral calculus. Then Toru Kumon invited several children who were in his neighborhood to study at his home and apply the same way of learning that was applied to Takeshi. As a result, all children who studied with his method experienced an increase in academic ability.
Seeing this result, Toru Kumon decided to develop the potential of as many children as possible through his learning method. Therefore, in 1958, Toru Kumon decided to set up an office in Osaka under the name Osaka Institute of Mathematics and open more Mathematics Classes. Officially, the Osaka Institute of Mathematics.Ltd was founded in 1962. In the same year, the first class was opened in Shinjuku, Tokyo .
Since the publication of the book Kumon-shiki Sansuu no Himitsu (The Mathematical Secrets of the Kumon Method) written by Toru Kumon in 1974, the Kumon Method has been increasingly recognized by the public at large. This book introduces the purpose and theory of the Kumon Method as well as real-life examples of effective tutoring and learning.
